and fire protection. The owner of Veritas Fire Consulting in Peachtree City, Georgia, Jeff Tanski investigates fires ranging from residential fires to commercial and multi-million dollar fires. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
NFPA publishes an annual report on large loss fires in the United States. Large loss fires are fires that result in property damage valued at $10 million or above. In its most recent report for the year 2018, NFPA recorded 36 large-loss fires in the United States, the highest number since 2007, when 47 were reported. Combined, the 36 fires resulted in 102 deaths, 66 injuries, and over $12.9 billion worth of property damage. Interestingly, 96 percent of this damage ($12.4 billion) was caused by just six fires, all wild fires that occurred in California. They were the Camp Fire, Woolsey Fire, Carr Fire, Ranch Fire, West Fire, and Cranston Fire.
In 2018 overall, US fire departments responded to 1,318,500 fires that resulted in combined losses worth $25.6 billion. The majority were small fires that resulted in little if any property damage.
